I am Granny's first granddaughter and Ellie is not only her first great-granddaughter, but her first great-grandbaby as well. We have a special bond, Granny and I, none like any other in the land. She has other grandkids, but I am her favorite…it's just the way it is.
Back to sewing. When I was pregnant with Ellie, I asked Granny to teach me how to sew. I wanted to sew my own pillows and curtains for the nursery and give it that "custom/handmade" touch. Granny walked me back to her bedroom and began teaching me the art of sewing on her 1940 White Zig Zag sewing machine.
Here she is.
Once I got the hang of it (loading the bobbin was definitely the hardest part for me, and I cursed my way through it…not really…okay maybe a little), I gathered up the courage to ask Granny, "Granny, can I have your sewing machine?" Granny smiled at me and said, "Sure you can darlin'! But you can keep it here at Granny's."
This was not what I had in mind…she told me I wasn't quite ready…what?!
Months later I convinced Granny I was "ready" to take the sewing machine to my house and began creating. I fell in love with that silly machine, as Granny warned me I would. It was so fun to bring my finished projects to Granny's house and show off what I had created. She would rant and rave, "Oh Lyndsey, this is wonderful!" But it was truly just because she was a really good (and patient) teacher.
(And I was a good student…not easy learning how to sew from an 86 year old…she's half blind too…and gets her words mixed up frequently…like she called her capris a leotard the other day…you get me...)
After Ellie was born (and the never-ending feeling of being utterly exhausted), I picked up right where I left off and began to sew again. Nap time projects consisted of burp cloths, throw pillows, even little dresses for Ellie!
A friend encouraged me to sell what I was making…so I did. I started a Facebook Page, named it Vintage Stitch, and began taking orders! Creating is my passion, especially when it is something for others! I love receiving handmade gifts, but I love making them even more!
